Nirmal Haloi College came into existence on July 30,1979 through the untiring efforts of a group of visionaries like late Dr. Homeswar Deva Choudhury, Late Prof. Rajani Kanta Sarma, Late Umesh Chandra Deva Choudhury, Late Jogeswar Goswami, Late Jitendra Nath Sarma, Munindra Narayan Goswami and countless others. At the time of foundation, the institution was named ‘Pragjyoti College’. ‘Pracchya Sangha’, the oldest sport and socio-cultural organization at Patacharkuchi, made the dreams of the visionaries a reality by offering the entire set-up for all the administrative and academic functions of the college.
The first batch of students, comprising 52 boys and girls, was admitted into the Pre-university(PU, now HS) class on 30/07/1979, of the total 52 students 28 were boys and 24 girls. An eminent teacher of History at Bajali College Late Krishna Goswami was the founder Principal. At the initial stage their were no permanent facilities. Some selfless and dedicated teachers of Patacharkuchi Vidyapith H.S. School, imparted teaching without any renumeration.
B.A. Course was introduced in the year 1985 with 32 students on the roll. Of the total students enrolled, 20 were boys and 12 were girls. The first batch appeared at the final examination in 1988. B.Com in 2017 with Major Course. The college got permanent affiliation of B.A. Part-1 of Gauhati University in 1987 and B.A. Part-11 in 1989. College came under Grants-in-aid system in 11th January, 1996. N.H. College was assessed by NAAC in 2005 and was accredited C++. The college came under Assam College Provincialisation Act in 2005. It came under 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC in Nov,2007. NAAC again assessed and accredited the college in second cycle accreditation in 2016 and awarded Grade “B”. At present, 1300 students are pursuing education at the under graduate level.
