Profile

The Department of English currently offers traditional undergraduate courses—both Major and Minor—for B.A. under the FYUGP, in alignment with the NEP 2020. In addition, the department offers add-on courses, such as: Creative Writing & Functional and Communicative English. In response to the growing student population and evolving real-world demands, the department is also planning to introduce need-based and student-support programs aimed at fostering academic progression and employability.

VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT:

Presently, the department functions with three permanent faculty members. However, in view of the increasing student intake and the broadening scope of interdisciplinary and diverse academic programs, there is an urgent requirement for at least two additional faculty members. With adequate support and resources, the Department of English aspires to:
- Introduce free coaching classes for SSC, Banking, Insurance, and Civil Services examinations, with active support from the college management.
- Launch PG programs in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, contributing to academic excellence and research culture within the institution.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
Despite limited resources and facilities, the Department of English strives to keep pace with the rapidly changing world. Many students have brought pride to the department and the institution through their hard work and dedication. Notably, the department has produced several rank holders in the Honours program at the BA final examinations conducted by Gauhati University.

Beyond academic excellence, students of the department have also distinguished themselves in co-curricular activities. Shri Nikumani Kalita (2019 batch) brought laurels to the college by winning awards in three music events at the University Youth Festival held at Gauhati University. Similarly, Shri Bishaljyoti Barman (2020 batch) secured a rank at the zonal youth festival, qualifying to compete in the main competition at Gauhati University.

In addition, Kritartha Patgiri and Gitartha Sandilya of the department won 3rd prizes in the Western Song Competition and Laghu Sangeet Competition, respectively, at the Gauhati University South-West Zone Inter-College Youth Festival 2024, organized by Baoshi Banikanta Kakati College, Nagaon, Barpeta.

PLACEMENT:
The Department of English takes great pride in the fact that nearly 100% of its alumni have secured employment or ventured into self-employment across diverse fields. To date, the total number of placements has exceeded 200, making the department's placement record one of the strongest in the college. This outstanding achievement reflects the department’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers.
